Mix CD Runner Up #2
The first of three. These are from the cds and these youtubes won’t quite bring across how they fit but. In general, I find I like to anchor the songs with groupings here and there. A few songs in the row from the same artist resonate and reduce the jumpiness you can get from being all over the map. Islands of music separated by stepping stones.
This was for someone who listened to entirely different music than I did including quite a bit of what they call New Country. So we have the alt-country to kick it off.
Josh Ritter: Me Me & Jiggs (exuberant performance), Golden Age of Radio
Rhett Miller: Meteor Shower, Help Me Suzanne, Fireflies
Joseph Arthur: Too Much to Hide
Peter Bjorn and John: Young Folks
Arcade Fire: Black Mirror, Windowsill, Intervention, No Cars Go, My Body is a Cage
Elliott Smith: Between the Bars, Bled White
Peter Bjorn and John: Let’s Call it Off
Madeline Peyroux: Between the Bars,
Madeline Peyroux: Dance Me to the End of Love
Frank Black: Sunday Mill Valley Sunday
Josh Ritter is a great folky type with a country tinge here and Rhett Miller (don’t those names go well together) takes it a little more to the alt-country (not much different from his Old 97 work, Fireflies features Rachel Yamagata on great husky backup) and then to Joseph Arthur losing all country. Then a tip of the hat to good old fashioned resurgent pop with Peter Bjorn and then a set from Arcade Fire. Elliott Smith with two great songs from two different cds and then Peter Bjorn again. Then Madeline doing her version of one of the Smith songs and then a Cohen (because my freind had just started listening to him), and finally the Frank Black just because it is a little odd and a pure fun singalong kind of song (one of the few songs he sang but didn’t write).
